The Mountain Horned Dragon is one of the most visually distinct lizards in the hobby. True to its name, it features prominent "horns" (long spines) above its eyes and on the back of its neck, giving it a devilish or triceratops-like appearance. A row of sharp spines runs down its entire spine. Coloration is usually a cryptic mix of brown, green, and rust, allowing it to blend into mossy branches.
Notes Temperament: surprisingly docile. They are slow-moving and generally tolerate handling well compared to skittish species like the Green Crested Lizard.
Husbandry: They require high humidity and cooler temperatures (montane species). They love deep substrate to lay eggs and sturdy branches to climb.
Why Source This Species:
-
The "Dragon" Look: It is the most affordable way to own a "pet dragon" with actual horns.
-
Manageable Size: Unlike large Water Dragons or Iguanas, these stay relatively small and can be housed in medium-sized terrariums.
-
Photogenic: Their unique eye horns make them a favorite subject for macro photography.
