The Thorny Stick Insect (Aretaon asperrimus) is a heavily built, ground-dwelling phasmid that resembles a piece of spiky bark or root. Unlike the typical twig-like stick insects, they have a robust, spiny body that feels rough to the touch. They are flightless and generally very slow-moving, making them excellent pets for handling as they are less fragile than thin species.

Notes: They are very easy to keep and breed. Unlike many stick insects, they spend a lot of time on the ground or low branches, so floor space is as important as height.
Handling Tip: While docile, their body is covered in small spines. Handle gently to avoid prickly sensations, though they cannot cause injury.

Why Source This Species:

  • Tactile Experience: One of the few insects that feels "tough" and can be handled safely by children.

  • Prolific Breeder: Easy to culture, providing a sustainable stock for shops.

  • Unique Texture: The bark-like appearance offers a great contrast to leaf mimics.
